Northern Michigan Rivers

November 6, 2024 //  by Kevin Johnston

11/6/24

Fished the Manistee and Au Sable Rivers over the past two weeks. Caught one steelhead nearly everyday on the Manistee. I got skunked on the Au Sable looking for Atlantic Salmon.

Manistee River details

Water was clear and low. Fished below Madson’s along the red clay banks. Fished exclusively with 6 and 8 millimeter beads either under a float or with a pencil weight. Fish bit early and late in the day; mid day was dead for us. Bead colors that worked were green or orange.

Au Sable River details

Steelhead and Atlantic Salmon – I didn’t get a bump! I fished beads and flies under a float. I also threw a 4″ Rapala or a chrome in line spinner. I did get a few follows with a PINK 1/16 oz crappie jig from interested Atlantic Salmon but no commitments. Tried white, black, purple and tan flies without a tap. Bead colors tried were peach, green, orange and yellow.
