February panfish

February 27, 2024 //  by Kevin Johnston

February 27, 2024

Fished Harsens Island from shore for panfish. Crazy to fish open water around Detroit in February. I caught a limit of perch, bluegill, pumpkinseed. I used 1″ long night crawler sections under a bobber. Here’s what I did differently than most:

Bobber: use a TINY float. I caught almost all the fish with a Gapen Bobber Anne Float; the 3″ model. I caught one fish on a rocket bobber for every 10 fish I caught on a Bobber Anne Float. The larger rocket bobber casts great, but the bite was light and I didn’t see many bites with the rocket bobber.

Leader: Use a fluorocarbon leader. I use 4 lb Blue Label Seaguar.

Eagle Claw gold aberdeen #6 hooks, tiny split shot and gas station night crawlers.

Dandy perch
True bluegill that hit mid day.
Pumpkinseed – from the same spot that produced the perch and bluegill.
