December perch

December 16, 2023 //  by Kevin Johnston

12/15 Trip started as a bluegill and crappie run on Lake Saint Clair. The first five marina canals were frozen over, so I did some scouting and found a a deeper canal with open water. Fished with 1/64 oz jigs with panfish assassin plastics one one rod, and a live minnow under a float on the other rod. Straight, painfully slow retrieve with the jig caught the most big fish. The minnow rig caught loads of dinks and a few decent perch. It was a real treat to boat fish Lake Saint Clair mid December.

Perch and bluegill on the cleaning board.
Tiny plastics weren’t immune to small perch!
Bluegill hit at dusk.
2.5 gallon pail half full of panfish.
