April on the Detroit River – walleye and pike

April 15, 2025 //  by Kevin Johnston

4/14/25

Fished the Detroit River launching from Wyandotte MI. Started jigging around Grass Island and POW a nice pike hit. Ran to the Livingston Channel and caught a couple walleye. Took a lunch break in the Dunbar and Sullivan gravel pit and caught three more pike drifting minnows while eating ham and cheese sandwiches. Ran upstream to the Post Office (caught nothing) then Alter Road at the Detroit River headwaters. Ended up with six walleye and two pike in the box! White was the best color followed by lemon yellow on 1 oz jig. Best walleye bite was 30 minutes before darkness. Both pike and walleye were first time catches for this angler from Dallas TX. Fun trip for sure.

Dandy pike from Grass Island.
One of six walleye!
